Interview with Corina Rideout, Female Crane Operator at Mammoet in Canada

Cranesy: I’m always impressed by strong women who choose this kind of hard job. How do you become a crane operator?
Corina Rideout: I became a crane operator because of my husband. He too is a crane operator I would listen to his stories about the lifts he made and it sparked an interest in me.

C.: Why a crane operator was a good career choice for you?
C. R.: I have always enjoyed working outside and meeting new people. What a better way to do both than to be in the seat of a crane.

C.: According your opinion why it’s rare that women across crane operator positions in this industry?
C. R.: I find it there are not a lot of women operators in the industry, I’m not sure if it’s because of the attitudes they receive from some of the guys, or because they are intimidated by the size of the cranes.

C.: What kind of course and how many years of studies are required for this job?
C. R.: I went to school for 24 weeks studying cranes and their manuals. I was than in the work force as an apprentice for three years, went back to school for six more weeks to become a Journeymen/ Red Seal operator.

C.: Role of Women in Construction Sector today. Your point of view?
C. R.: More and more women are being accepted into the crane sector these days because we are showing our strength as women.

C.: Your Strenghts?
C. R.: My strengths are: I have a don’t quit attitude. I’m personable, hard working and dependable.

C.: Your favourite quote for Women in Crane Sector?
C. R.: I tell all the women operators that if a man can do it so can we.

C.: The tips to young ladies who want to work like crane operators?
C. R.: For the younger woman that want to get into the crane industry: do your research to ensure that it is truly something you want to do. It’s hard work, but if you apply yourself to your work, you will do great.

C.: When you are not working, how do you spend your time?
C. R.: When I’m not at work I enjoy quality time with family and friends at our family cabin or just relax at home with my children.

C.: New Year’s Resolutions?
C. R.: My New Years Resolution is to quit smoking and to live a healthier life style.

Corina: My hobbies are racing my Mustang, going for ride on quad, fishing and enjoying time at home.

Corine: Success to me is setting a goal for yourself and accomplishing that goal. Reach for the stars.
