Enerpac's Hengelo Facility Awarded ISO 45001 Safety Standard

Leading heavy lifting systems supplier, Enerpac, has been awarded the ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Standard in recognition of the company’s achievements in improving employee health and safety. It is the fourth ISO standard achieved by Enerpac’s Hengelo manufacturing site over the past 5 years, covering quality and environmental management and fusion welding practices for Heavy Lifting Technology products.

The ISO45001 award is the outcome of Enerpac’s systematic drive to set the highest safety standards for the development, manufacturing, assembly, testing, sales and distribution of high pressure hydraulic equipment and integrated heavy lifting systems. Responsibility for on-site health and safety is managed by a steering committee comprising members from the Works Council, management team, human resources and employee safety representative.

Enerpac Health and Safety leads in Hengelo, Jaap de Geus and Frank Schiphorst, welcome the structure provided by ISO 45001. “It provides a Health and Safety framework and tools to identify potential risks and the steps needed to either reduce or eliminate them completely. We’ve been working towards ISO 45001 for the past three years and have seen the benefits of taking a proactive approach to health and safety” says Jaap de Geus.

Health and Safety – Everyone’s Responsibility

The Steering Committee meet monthly to review health and safety risks and reports. Frank Schiphorst highlights the importance of Enerpac’s commitment to training; “1 in 4 employees are first responders and receive First Aid and resuscitation device training. Every three months we simulate an incident with an actor, this allows employees to put their training into practice, and highlight any areas for improvement.”

Safe working is fundamental to the construction and operation of Enerpac’s heavy lifting systems used in some of the largest construction and lifting projects in the world. “Just as safety is built-in to the design and operation of our systems, so it is a fundamental part of the culture of our company. ISO 45001 is an important milestone in our journey to ensure a safe working environment for employees and visitors to our Hengelo site. Health and safety is everyone’s responsibility at Enerpac,” notes Mart Hinnen, General Manager, Enerpac HLT.

ISO 45001 – Occupational Health and Safety

The ISO 45001 standard was developed by a committee of occupational health and safety experts and follows other generic management system approaches such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. It will take into account other International Standards in this area such as OHSAS 18001, the International Labour Organization’s ILO-OSH Guidelines, various national standards and the ILO’s international labour standards and conventions.
