SC&RA Crane & Rigging Workshop Scheduled for Sept. 23-25 in Denver

The schedule has been set for the Crane & Rigging Workshop to be held by the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) on Sept. 23-25, at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Denver, Colo. SC&RA is optimistic that the 2015 Workshop will be even more successful than last year’s Workshop in Dallas, Texas, which attracted over 550 engineers, crane operators, safety directors and top management from 10 nations.

As always at this annual event, the focus is on safety issues, regulatory and legislative updates, and networking opportunities. Some of the industry’s top professionals will present educational sessions during the annual workshop, including, in order of schedule:

Strategies to Build Your Future Workforce—Hall of Fame Keynote Speaker Eric Chester will share proven strategies that renowned companies use to attract, develop and retain young workers at jobs they ordinarily don’t consider sexy; learn how to remain relevant with this emerging workforce and how to implement the “7 Pillars of an On Fire Workplace Culture.”

Jack & Roll Techniques—Jeremy Landry, Deep South Crane and Rigging, LLC, will examine options when cranes simply will not fit in the available workspace. Find out safe procedures for moving large, heavy loads horizontally, including a variety of ways to use hydraulic skidder systems.
Crucial Calls when Evaluating Wire Rope—John Groce, WireCo, will explain how to choose the right wire rope for the job and, after subsequent use, determine whether it should be removed or repaired. This is a must session for those who are responsible for inspecting wire rope or supervise someone who does.

Uncovering the Root Causes of Crane Accidents—Klaus Meisner, Terex Cranes, will examine several incidents in-depth and identify the root cause of each. His analysis will cover additional safety measures that should be implemented to help prevent similar incidents on attendees’ own jobsites.

Increasing Safety and Productivity through Visual Technology—Frank Hegan, Crane Tech Solutions, will provide an introduction to the benefits of visual technology and its ability to enhance situational awareness on jobsites. Through real life examples, he will show how this technology can improve safety on crane and rigging projects.
New Crane Rules=New Compliance Directives—Bill Smith, NBIS, will cover lesser known aspects of the Cranes and Derrick in Construction safety standard that went into effect in 2010, focusing on how compliance officers interpret the directive when deciding whether to issue a citation.

Rigging Inspections:” It’s Not THAT Bad”—Mike Riggs, Rigging Institute, LLC, will provide examples of frequently overlooked inspection points for common sling types. Through the use of a testing machine, he will demonstrate just how bad the damage really is.
Project Spotlight: New NY Bridge Project—John Glinski, Tappan Zee Construction, LLC, will explain how a consortium comprised of some of the world’s foremost design, engineering and construction firms is making replacement of the existing New York Tappan Zee Bridge a reality after over a decade of delays.

Repair vs. Replace—Moderated by George Young, George Young Company, this panel that includes Don Moore, Link-Belt Construction Equip. Co.; Scott Wilson, Crane Service, Inc.; and Dave Wood, WHECO Corporation, will examine such considerations as the new OSHA requirements, technical issues, legal aspect of repairs, manufacturers’ views on aftermarket repair, and liability issues when deciding whether to repair or replace structures.
Setting up for Success—Kris Koberg, DICA Outrigger Pads, will cover the three factors affecting the size of the crane mat or outrigger pad: load weight, grown bearing pressure and ground bearing capacity. He also will provide common rules of thumb and engineering principles for sizing crane mats or pads.

2015 Rigging Jobs of the Year—Representatives from Barnhart Crane & Rigging, Fagioli, and Trandata Movimentacao De Cargas Complexas will present details of this year’s four winners, including the lifting, transport and setting of massive components at a nuclear plant; placement of two giant rolling-mill pieces at one of the world’s largest specialty long-steel manufacturing plants; installation of connecting beams to Italy’s tallest building; and removal and replacement of a 2.5-megawatt Clipper C-00 wind turbine generator.

The Workshop will begin with the SC&RA Crane & Rigging Group’s Tower Crane Committee on September 22. Additional meeting and events throughout the Workshop include: meetings of the Safety Education & Training Committee, Labor Committee, and Governing Committee; an Exhibit Center featuring products and services from 86 companies; a mega raffle drawing; a complimentary hot buffet lunch; receptions; continental breakfasts and refreshment breaks.
