Van Oord has ordered its first LNG-powered crane vessel
Van Oord has ordered its first LNG-powered crane vessel, named Werkendam, to be deployed to its subsidiary Paans Van Oord for Netherlands-based projects.
The vessel will feature a 38 cu m tank on the aft deck and will be able to store enough LNG on board to sail and operate for 14 days without bunkering for LNG.
According to Jaap de Jong, staff director of the Ship Management Department at Van Oord: “Energy efficiency is one of the top items on our sustainability agenda. To reduce our carbon footprint, we are researching the use of alternative fuels, such as LNG and biofuel. With this investment, we will be gaining experience of LNG-powered vessels and the related benefits.”
The Werkendam is being built by Neptune Shipyards in Hardinxveld-Giessendam, the Netherlands. The 68.4 m long vessel will take approximately 12 months to build and will feature a four-rope grab crane which has a lifting capacity of 20 tonnes at 20 m, and 25 tonnes at 16 m.
